Elliot Lim : The Wire Credits
Late to the party on this one but I had to post this. Animator, Elliot Lim has designed and directed one of the coolest videos I’ve seen for a while now. That is subjective though as it requires an appreciation for The Wire, or good animation. Anyway, as a fan of the aforementioned show, I was intrigued to see this clip and reignite some memories of my student days binge watching on box set instead of writing research essays.
I was not disappointed. This is top banana. Elliot has recreated the credit sequence in perfect fashion, staying true to the original concept. The Wire’s opening credits were always set to Tom Wait’s “Way Down The Hole” performed by a different artist each season. The one I felt worked best was DoMaJe’s performance (Season 4) but this cut, by The Blind Boys Of Alabama works extremely well.
Lim’s credits amalgamates 5 seasons worth of stories into a pleasing mini narrative. As with the originals, they provide a snapshot that cleverly alluded to the particular season’s direction, whilst maintaining the same visual cues and editing patterns throughout. I created a little piece for Elliot using some drawn type that hints to the show and two of my favourite characters, Stringer Bell & Jimmy McNulty, above. Fun fact, on paper, the pair of actor's faces are the size of a five pence piece. If you want a mini portrait, click through here and leave a message. Cheers!
